The Unbelievable Andy Kaufman

Comedian and performer Andy Kaufman's resume was impressive--a popular role on the beloved sitcom Taxi, a high-profile stand-up career, and a surprisingly successful stint in professional wrestling. Although he was by all accounts a sensitive and thoughtful person, he's ironically best remembered for his various contemptible personas, which were so committed and so convincing that all but his closest family and friends were completely taken in. Why would someone so gentle-natured and sensitive build an entire career seeking the hatred of his audience? What drives a performer to solicit that reaction?

This is a fast read and great for anyone who may have heard some vague talk about Andy Kaufman while growing up in the 90's (like me), but didn't know who he actually was. A quick primer to be sure, but a fun one. The art is geometric and concise, but above all, affable, just like Kaufman always revealed himself to be after his acts ended.

In the age of the Internet where it becomes so difficult to tell whether a public performer is kidding or not, really believes a thing or not - it's interesting to see that in history this sort of engagement has been a thing that performers have done many times with varying results. Kaufman really walked the line between his characters and reality to such a degree that he messed with a lot of people's heads. What an intense, unique personality. It's really so sad that he died as young as he did. I'm glad I got to meet him in this book.

Amateurish, clumsy characters, dumb dialogue and story.

This book was fun to read. I had no idea who Andy was besides seeing the movie which stars Jim Carrey. I will now be looking into youtube for some more direct exposure to who the man Andy Kaufman was. It is interesting that one can be so amused and captivated by indirect biographical material.

Box Brown delivers a loving tribute to Andy Kaufman, focusing on his performances in both comedy and professional wrestling. It's a fascinating portrait of an iconoclast whose work was ahead of his time, even today.
