"A twisty, compelling new novel about one woman's complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in death... From the moment Lucy met her husband's mother, Diana, she was kept at arm's length. Diana was exquisitely polite, and properly friendly, but Lucy knew that she was not what Diana envisioned. But who could fault Diana? She was a pillar of the community, an advocate for social justice who helped female refugees assimilate to their new country. Diana was happily married to Tom, and lived in wedded bliss for decades. Lucy wanted so much to please her new mother-in-law. That was five years ago. Now, Diana has been found dead, a suicide note near her body. Diana claims that she no longer wanted to live because of a battle with cancer. But the autopsy finds no cancer. The autopsy does find traces of poison and suffocation. Who could possibly want Diana dead? Why was her will changed at the eleventh hour to disinherit both of her adult children and their spouses? With Lucy's secrets getting deeper and her relationship with her mother-in-law growing more complex as the pages turn, this new novel from Sally Hepworth is sure to add to her growing legion of fans." -- Provided by publisher.

Lucy's relationship with her mother-in-law Diana has been rocky at best, and, when Diana is found dead by suicide, Lucy's problems seem to be over. The police, however, aren't satisfied, which sets off a chain of events that reveals family secrets. This clever book kept me reading and guessing to... Read More »

This book is different than what I expected. The title, The Mother-in-law, made me think there would be some comedy and witty sarcasm. It’s not about that at all, but takes a serious look at relationships, especially between women. The book shows a lot of stress behind relationships as the details in those relationships are unfolded.

Great book, ones of those that I did not want to put down. Only complaint would be the anti climax of who killed Diana, but truthfully that wasn't what the book was about.

I loved this fast paced mystery/thriller. I really enjoyed the different perspectives and how feelings and actions can be so misinterpreted by different people. Such a good book!

Wow! Totally not what I was expecting...much, much better.
I definitely had a hard time putting this book down.
Wonderful mystery with a GREAT ending.

Part thriller, part family drama. I listened to the audiobook, which includes an interview with the author, and she discusses how her books address women's health. This one is heavy with discussions about mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationships, infertility, stay-at-home vs. working moms, depression, and more. It's one of those books that illustrates why you can't judge someone without walking in their shoes (or hearing their side of the story in a great book)!

This book is quite the page turner. If you like juicy soap opera kind of stories that grow and grow in suspense, you will love this book.

A comment from another reviewer here has given me pause about how the subject of women with fertility issues is perceived by the author. However, when thinking about it more, it seems like there are separate issues going on for the character...

Wonderful read!
