The day before her parents' twentieth wedding anniversary Sylvia Miller stumbles across the key to the old brass tinderbox her father, Earnest, keeps in his Lancaster County watch repair shop. Inside is a secret from his life as an Englisher; when she confronts him, Earnest admits that he is not fit to be a member of the Hickory Hollow Amish church. He confesses his secret to Rhoda, his wife, and Sylvia, but when word of Earnest's deceit reaches others in the community the truth pits Amish neighbors against one another, threatens to dry up Earnest's livelihood-- and to break up Sylvia's engagement to the preacher's grandson. -- adapted from back cover and perusal of book.

I liked this book. This is not my favorite book by Beverly Lewis but it was a good book.
I found it interesting to learn about the big secret that was hidden inside the tinderbox and how it slowly unraveled.
This book just really proves that secrets don’t stay buried forever and that it’s really important to always be honest not matter what. Even if you don’t blatantly tell a lie, not telling the whole truth can be just as bad.
Even though I know that the focus of this story was not on Sylvia and her relationship with her beau, I do have to say that I feel like their relationship is doomed and the few scenes we got from them together did not make me like them as a couple. I really hope that they don’t end up together in the sequel book because their relationship just didn’t come across as very healthy and mutual.
