Positive comments: Not since "Calvin and Hobbes" has there been a cartoon (okay, anime in this case) that shows childhood as it really IS, with the fantastical frames of reference and without all the sweet sentimentality. And like Calvin, what we at first take for the child's immagination may be something more. The animation is a lush, colorful, and detailed mix of hand-drawn and CG.

Negative comments: Also like Calvin, the child is a brat -- and here we have to listen to him rather than just imagine his wails. Also, some of the characters seem rather generic. Maybe those who designed them could have done a better job (having Mirai show a birthmark on her hand, for us to identify her future version, doesn't really work since her face and outfit are so commonplace in the genre).

Ambiguous comment: No atempt is made in the English version to explain the pun in the Japanese title. "Mirai no Mirai", with the first "Mirai" written in kanji and the second in katakana, means "Future's Future" -- a repetititive form which loses its charm in English if rendered simply as "Mirai" (the character's name) or "Future" (what it means). ...But I can't think of a way to do it any better.

an interesting mode of story-telling and nice animation, but the little boy is a screaming monster of a child that made this viewer wonder why his parents, who obviously had problems in their own relationship, chose to reproduce a second time, and why anyone would create such a character and force people to listen to it yowl. by the end, we're supposed to feel all happy that the parents acknowledge their faults and the boy doesn't murder his little sister, but the underlying issues here are huge and depressing. the method of telling the story backwards and forwards through time and different characters is effective, in a way, but my overall sense was the futility of it all. this is an unhappy family with an unhappy dog. even magic and the wisdom of ages can't save them from themselves.

Mamoru Hosoda specializes in family dramas that include an element of the fantastic or supernatural. The story of Mirai, in particular, was inspired by watching his own 3-year-old son's reactions to his newborn baby sister.

Jealous of his new baby sister, four-year old Kun begins acting out, making life near impossible for mom and dad. But he gets a lesson or two in love and family ties when he stumbles upon a magical oak tree with the power to transport him back and forth in time. A wonderful piece of anime which brings one little boy’s fantastical daydreams to vivid life whether it be a bonding moment with his long deceased great-grandfather or a menacing bullet train to Hell.

A realistic story of a child dealing with the emotions of sharing the love of his parents with a newborn sister.
The mysterious tree in the yard where the boy encounters strange places and people leaves one to wonder if it is the boy’s imagination or if real magic is happening. Either way it makes for a magical film.
The main character may seem like a brat, but it us a somewhat realistic view of a child fearing the loss of his parents love.

The animation is extremely well done with fabulous details. Revolving around a young growing family, the stories show a glimpse into emotions experienced though time.

Heartwarming movie that explores sibling rivalry as a main theme. Great animation and relaxed pace. Can see why this was nominated for an oscar.

This movie was so good, I had to check to see if it was a Ghibli movie. It's not, but it's such a good family movie!
