Think you know Bruce? Just as his Born in the USA song was misinterpreted as a righteous blast of patriotism, alternative takes give a fresh perspective to past anthems of youth. This too-short live solo performance gives us a peak behind the creative curtain of a person comfortable with his loyalties, humiliation and success. Especially recommended to those that have not been a fan.

Bruce is witty and charming and personable and I have always been drawn to his music. Hadn’t realized what the show was like before this CD but it really works for me, especially because it reminds me of an acoustic performance of his work and I have loved his more acoustic works. One of the things I really loved in this show was his take on Thunder Road. When he started singing, I thought to myself that this was interesting to have an older man singing about a younger persona trying to convince a young woman to join him in leaving a seemingly dead-end existence. But, for me, he sang this as a weary older person singing to an adult woman. Reminded me very much of Joni Mitchell’s later version of “Both Sides Now” (used in “Love Actually”), same kind of emotional depth.

Since it wouldn't be possible to travel to New York City to see Bruce Springsteen on Broadway, the cd worked for me. I had read about his show in excellent reviews in the New York Times. Listening to the cd was like Bruce talking to me in my car. We were on a journey together with him talking and singing with an acoustic guitar. Thanks for being so kind to share your life with so many on your excellent album!

Fun, fun, fun. More like an audiobook. He gives a little history of how he wrote the songs and then performs each acoustically. This guy has such an interesting past and has a great sense of humor.
