I love this series so much. While the characters are animals, they are very true to life. One element of good fantasy is that the characters show us what we can become, for good or for evil, and this is not lacking in the Mistmantle Chronicles. With the exception of the ravens in book 4, the sort of "species stereotyping" that some have labeled as racism in the Redwall series is not present. This which makes for deeper explorations into the potential that everyone has for good or for evil. The one thing that stands out for me in this series, above everything else, is the community and the fellowship that the animals on Mistmantle Island share. It's good and real and uplifting and even (I believe) possible.

Such a fantastic series of books that will captivate you and take you to a different world where the animals of Mistmantle will carry you away on adventures abound. We just loved that the characters in these stories are animals with human qualities. The books are so well written and take your imagination to another time and place. You will not be disappointed with these tales. These books were bedtime reads with our 9 yr old. I could tell he ws continually captivated and often on the 'edge of his seat' or giggling with perfectly placed laughter at the character's hijinx! It's a shame there's only 4 books in the series! Enjoy.

An absolutely fantastic book; the series continues to amaze in the next books as well. This book is similar in some ways to Brian Jacques' Redwall series, but less violent and with subtle Christian undertones, such as references to the Heart, who corresponds to God, and the priests of the island, who provide guidance and religious leadership. I loved this book when I read it. The characters were well drawn and likable, struggling with problems and desires of their own. The differences between species were not as obvious as Redwall though. If you are looking for a good book, Urchin of the Riding Stars is one you should definitely read.
