a very good book. she starts out good but turns evil and dies at the end.

Definitely a unique take on the Evil Queen's origins. With such a tragic backstory, though, I really wanted to see more redemption than the traditional Snow White story could allow for.

Not bad back story of the evilqueen unfortunately it needs more detailing like whats the name of the evil queen.
You can entirely finish the whole book without mentioning the queens name!
Moreover i love how it ends atleast thats something to hold on

Maybe this would be a better book for kids, but as an adult who reads all fairy tale retellings I can get my hands on, I was pretty disappointed with this one. While not as epically bad as her version of Beauty and the Beast, the book still had a crummy writing style, some implausible moments, and confusing passages. I thought the particular example of not even naming the Queen really limited her character, while Verona seemed much more dimensional. If you want a good backstory, head over to ABC's Once Upon A Time. Now that's an Evil Queen to admire.

When we went to Disney Land a few years ago, my brother and I were each given a certain amount of money for souvenirs. I found this book as we were about to leave, and since nothing else had caught my attention I picked this as a souvenir. The first couple of times I read it, it was pretty good. It is really well written, and it's great to the the behind-the-scenes to why the stepmother was so obsessed with beauty, and where the mirror came from. However, I eventually realized that portions of it are quite disturbing. The Queen is haunted (literally!) by the mirror who features the face of her abusive father. It drives her insane (literally) until all she can think about is cutting Snow White's heart out. She even begins to sleepwalk out to the woods to dig into the ground with her fingernails after banning the mirror there. It terrifies her, but she needs it. I personally find that disturbing, and I got rid of the book. I totally agree that it's good, but too humanely off to read.

An interesting backstory adds a lot more depth to the Evil Queen from Snow White, and really explains in a more realistic way why she became so cold and jealous toward her stepdaughter Snow White. However, the unique take on the story is where the pros of the book end. Honestly, this book was just average. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that great either. The prose was sometimes stilted and flat, the dialogue could've been greatly improved, and the writing style was not impressive. Also, there were some scattered grammar and spelling errors and several instances of run-on sentences that a decent editor would have caught. Besides this, the ending left me rather confused and just seemed too tidy and flat.
Altogether, a wonderful idea, but executed poorly. However, I did like the backstory of the Queen, so I finished the book. But if that didn't hold me, I wouldn't have bothered.
