A New & Noteworthy Fiction staff pick. Men working to select words for the first Oxford English Dictionary drop words on the floor that they deem unnecessary. The young daughter of one starts collecting those slips of words that will one day become an alternative dictionary. This historical fiction debut based on real events will enchant.

I highly recommend this book. I loved that I was taken back to a time when women were strongly advocating for women’s rights. The narrative was beautifully written and I loved that there was true stories included. However, I really loved how it made me reflect on the number of words that are used against women, to belittle women, to shame women, to remove women form history or culture. When we think of a derogatory word for a woman, are we able to think of the equivalent for a man? Further, are we able to name the same number of derogatory words used for men as there are for women? The unique story of this book intrigued me so much and I can say quite honestly that it has been one of the best reads of 2020 for me.
