This is the first time I really disliked a Laurie Halse Anderson book. This was well below her normal standard. There is a lot that is wrong with this book. Kate has pinned all of her future plans on getting into MIT. Even after she is wait listed, she doesn't apply anywhere else. She lies to everyone about this, pretending to have applied elsewhere. Melinda from Speak makes a cameo, and apparently this is set about a year after that book. Clearly nobody at this high school learned anything in that year, since a girl is bullied, fights back, and then is pinned under a group of boys in the cafeteria. She ends up being arrested while all the boys go free. Something happens in the middle of the book that felt like something that would happen in a Nicholas Sparks book just to be melodramatic. It was really poorly written. I expected so much more from Laurie Halse Anderson.
