I've said it before and will say it again - Terry Brooks is an AWFUL writer. Specifically in this book it is worth mentioning that I found the premise that a seven year old girl - elf or no elf - living on her own in a human village and being allowed to take care of the human children in that village to be totally unbelievable. Also unbelievable is the idea that any parent/grandparents would allow a 7 year old child to run away from home the way she did, leaving her to survive on her own in the human world, or be as angry as these people were over her supposed dereliction of "duty" - without bothering to find out why the child was so terribly frightened, nor making any attempt to understand her. Elves in Shannara must be really REALLY bad parents! Also the near-romance that is implied between Will and Amberle is pretty creepy, given that Amberle is SEVEN YEARS OLD. My guess is that the intent was to show a burgeoning friendship, but Terry Brooks is SUCH a bad writer that it does not come off that way.
