Where have I been all my life? why am I just discovering the delightful author that is Melanie Dickerson?? as it happens, this is the first book I have read from her and it certainly will not be the last. I have already put the rest of her books on my "to read" list. J'adore books about the Regency era where propriety and good manners ruled the day! and in those days, one didn't have to look far to see gentlemen and "chivalry" in action! The reader is presented with chivalry, charm and good looks from the dashing hero Nicholas who with his noble heart and compassion sets out to solve a mystery that was critical for England! on the way he of course encounters the humble and beautiful Miss Grey. They band together to save England! She tried not to, but she falls for him and despite circumstances of "class" and "propriety", a romance blooms! I really liked the character development of the heroine. I felt that I related to her in critical elements. She did not throw herself at a man in contrast to "other women" in the novel but she was honest about her feelings, something I believe was critical for the romance in the end. Another thing, is I really like romances where it's a slow burn. Where people are in control of their emotions and don't just act immediately on something just because they feel to. This was truly a delight to read. if you are a fan of Julie Klassen, or related regency works you should like this as well.
