Bowen introduces us to a large cast of characters as vicar's son and M15 agent Ben Cresswell is given the task of trying to find a Nazi collaborator in the quiet rural setting surrounding Farleigh Place, the home of the Earl of Westerham and his wife and five daughters. Touches of Downton Abbey (sibling rivalry, romance gone wrong, etc.) are not enough to turn this into the truly sweeping WWII saga Bowen may have had in mind, but it is a good read. Fans of Bowen's "Molly Murphy mysteries" may be more likely to enjoy it than those who only know her humorous "Royal Spyness" series.
