This movie was a big miss for me. I have always loved the book "The Story of Ferdinand" by Munro Leaf and this movie completely failed to capture the message of peace, gentleness and tolerance celebrated in the slim, picture book classic. Because the original story is so slight, the movie is chock-full of padding, slapstick filler, and random extraneous and unlikeable characters. Some of this extra padding is downright painful to watch, such as the dance-off scenes and the slaughterhouse scenes. Ugh! I also found it infuriating that one of the few characters from the book, Ferdinand's understanding mother, is removed completely from the movie and never mentioned! This seems like an insult to all women since she is one of the main characters in the book! Instead his father is in the movie and turned into Ferdinand's hero. I found the movie pretty loathsome and I would rather read the gentle, charming, delightful book over and over than ever watch this loud travesty again.
