While I recognize their huge role in the ecosystem, I’m actually quite afraid of bees (really, I scream when they get too close!) but I absolutely loved learning about these creatures, particularly in this fictional narrative format. I became more interested in bees, their complex lives and social structure, and developed a new appreciation for them, separate from my feelings of their ecological importance. They are complicated little insects!" Show less

The professor touted the book as one of the most important books for budding environmentalists to read, but I was not very moved by his rave reviews. Once I started to read the book, I couldn’t put it down. I loved how Leopold painted a mental image of the mountain landscape and used anecdotes to exemplify the deep connections between humans, wildlife, and the land. A Sand County Almanac demonstrated ecology in a way that made sense to me. Leopold wrote a lot about wildlife that was novel to me (though native to the United States), and I especially loved reading about one of my favorite animals--the wolf.” Show less
