CRRL History: Spotsylvania County

Spotsylvania, which used to include the town of Fredericksburg, may be best known outside the area for the several Civil War battles that were fought there, but the area's written history traces to colonial times, and its pre-contact history would be largely that of the Manahoac, a Siouan-language people who later joined with the Monacan and other tribes .
