Halloween night, 1984. In Coventry, Massachusetts, trick-or-treaters walk door-to-door as the families behind the doors of Parmenter Road fracture and break. But mixed in with the kids of the neighborhood are four children who don't belong, in vintage costumes with faded makeup, and begging the others to "hide them away from the Cunning Man." Then, a mysterious clearing appears in the nearby woods, which, like the children, doesn't belong. With families divided and bitter among themselves, who will save the children? And what does lurk in the mysterious clearing in the woods?

To Anna's displeasure, the Pace family destination vacation to Italy has begun. Anna Pace is the only one in her family who doesn't fit in. Her twin brother, Benny, goes with the flow of everything and anything, while her older sister Nicole presumes everyone follows in line behind her, including her husband and children. Anna's mom constantly questions her life choices, while her father just wants some peace and quiet, letting everyone know "he" paid for this vacation, so that's what "he" deserves. Instead, Anna tries to focus on beauty of the remote Italian villa they're in, the Monteperso, rather than her irritating family... until things take a strange and supernatural turn.
